East Cobb’s Hightower Trail Middle School takes it’s name from the the Hightower Trail, a major Native American thoroughfare. Hightower Trail is the anglicized name for the Etowah Trail, a name derived from the Cherokee word Ita-Wa, which English settlers recorded as “Hightower”. It was a major Native American thoroughfare connecting the Augusta area with the Cherokee towns in northwest Georgia and the Etowah River area, crossing the Chattahoochee River near present-day Roswell. A 1931 historical marker for the “Hightower Indian Trail” can be found near the entrance to the Harrison Park Tennis Center in East Cobb. Another Hightower Trail marker is located near the intersection of Shallowford Road NE and Mountain Trace NE.
